Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

The licensing model of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is based on a "named-user licence". This means that a named-user licence is required for each user.
The previous versions (Microsoft Dynamics NAV) were provided as a "concurrent-user licence" - an access licence that is only regulated on the basis of the total number of users who can log into the system at the same time. In the "named-user licence" model, only named users with a licence can log into the system.

In simplified terms, the licensing of Business Central is divided into three core components with different functional scopes:

1. Essential user
The Essential User provides the base (like the former starter package), and thus functionalities and areas such as project and warehouse management, financial accounting and much more.

2. Premium user
Building on this, the Premium User provides extended functionalities such as service management and production.

3. Team member
If you have users who only need full read access, you can provide Team Member licenses for these users. These will then have full read access to the unlocked user (Essential or Premium). As a Team Member with limited user options but access to basic processes, you can then report, read and approve (there are still exceptions).

You can use Essential OR Premium User licences in your company - i.e. equip all users with either an Essential or a Premium User licence. If you initially opt for Essential User licences, you can upgrade to Premium User licences at any time - but then it applies to all users.
Team Member licences can be purchased in addition to Essential or Premium User licences.

When deploying in the cloud, only these  three licensing variants mentioned above are available. Regardless of Essential and Premium User licences, developer licences and licences for specific objects can also be purchased for on-premises deployment.
